Odisha voter list deletion has become a major issue in the state after the Biju Janata Dal BJD raised objections over the removal of around 9.8 lakh names from the electoral rolls before the Special Intensive Revision SIR. On Wednesday, the party held a protest and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer, asking for immediate safeguards to protect genuine voters.

The BJD said voter list revision is necessary to keep elections fair and transparent. However, the party claimed that the number of deleted names this time is unusually high and has created fear among many voters. It said many people have already complained that their names were removed even though they still live at their registered addresses.

Odisha Voter List Deletion Raises Serious Concern

According to the party, the voter roll revision in Odisha is taking place after a long gap since 2002. Because of this, the BJD believes the process should be handled with extra care. The party warned that if strong checks are not followed, more eligible voters may lose their names from the list.

The memorandum also mentioned that nearly 2 lakh objections have been filed within a short period. The BJD said this shows that public concern is widespread and that there may be errors in the verification process.

BJD Seeks Proper Verification

The party demanded that Booth Level Officers must carry out proper physical and document-based verification before any voter name is deleted. It said the process should be fair, humane, and inclusive so that innocent people are not removed from the voter list by mistake.

BJD leaders stressed that the rights of eligible voters must be protected at every stage. They said wrongful deletion of names can weaken trust in the democratic system and create anger among the public.

Migrant Workers Need Protection

The party expressed special concern for migrant and temporary workers from Odisha who stay outside the state for jobs. Since many of them may not be present during verification, there is a risk that their names could be removed unfairly.

The BJD said absence from home during verification should not become a reason to deny someone the right to vote. It also pointed out that Non-Resident Indians can remain enrolled in their native constituencies, so migrant workers should also receive fair treatment.

Fear of Social Impact

The party warned that removing genuine voters from the rolls may cause social and emotional tension in villages. If people are denied their voting rights without proper reason, it can lead to distrust and disharmony in local communities.

For this reason, the BJD urged election authorities to act carefully and make sure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral process.

Main Demands of BJD

No voter name should be deleted without proper verification.

Booth Level Officers should do physical and document checks before removal.

Migrant and temporary workers should be protected from wrongful deletion.

The entire revision process should remain transparent and fair.

The issue of Odisha voter list deletion is likely to remain important in the coming days as political parties and voters closely watch the revision process. The BJD has made it clear that protecting the voting rights of genuine electors must be the top priority.
