Odisha steel output by 2030 is now a major goal of the state government, as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a strong plan to raise steel production to 100 million tonnes per annum. Speaking at a special event in Sambalpur on Friday, the Chief Minister said Odisha has the natural resources, policy support, infrastructure, and execution strength needed to reach this target.

The announcement came during a programme linked to the new partnership between JSW Steel Limited and JFE Steel Corporation of Japan. CM Majhi said this joint venture is an important step for Odisha as it moves from being mainly an iron ore supplier to becoming a major high-value steel manufacturing hub.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, this is the biggest single Japanese investment in Odisha so far, with an investment of Rs15,000 crore. The project will expand JSW Steel’s existing capacity by an additional 10 MTPA. This will strengthen Odisha’s position in the global steel market and help the state meet growing demand from both India and export markets.

Odisha Steel Output by 2030 Gets Major Boost

At present, Odisha produces around 40 million tonnes of steel every year. The state now aims to more than double that capacity by 2030. The Chief Minister said this growth is important because demand for steel is rising fast due to infrastructure expansion, industrial development, and downstream manufacturing activities.

CM Majhi also announced a bigger development vision for western Odisha. He said Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Deogarh will together form the Sambalpur growth economic corridor. This corridor is expected to attract investments worth Rs 1 lakh crore and create more than 2 lakh jobs in the coming years.

The Chief Minister said the JSW-JFE partnership will help Odisha produce more high-grade and specialty steel by using advanced Japanese technology and operational expertise. The total value of the broader JSW-JFE venture is expected to cross Rs 30,000 crore. He highlighted that JFE’s expertise in electrical steel will be especially useful for sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, power transformers, and energy-efficient motors.

Majhi also said the project will create skilled jobs and support the growth of an advanced downstream manufacturing base in Odisha. This will help place the state on the global supply chain map and improve its industrial profile in the coming years.

The Chief Minister invited JFE Steel to invest further in Keonjhar, his home district. He said the district offers major advantages such as direct access to high-grade iron ore, lower transport costs, better links to industrial corridors, and improving infrastructure. He added that production costs in Keonjhar could be up to 50% lower, and assured fast-track approvals and support for strategic investors.

With strong policy backing, rising investment, and new global partnerships, Odisha is clearly pushing ahead with its long-term industrial vision. The state’s target of 100 MTPA steel output by 2030 now looks like a central part of its future growth story.
