Master canteen Bhubaneswar Odisha name will go to change.

Bhubaneswar, Odisha: A significant landmark in the heart of Bhubaneswar, the iconic Master Canteen Square, is potentially in line for a name change. This move, hinted at by Odisha’s Housing and Urban Development Minister, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, aims to revive and strengthen Odia Asmita and cultural pride. The minister officially suggested this on Saturday, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing regional heritage over colonial-era names.

Discussions are reportedly underway regarding the renaming of several prominent locations in Odisha that still bear names from the British era. Minister Mahapatra stated that “The time has come to shed remnants of colonial influence and embrace names that reflect our own roots and legacy”.

Master Canteen, situated near the railway station, is not only a well-known landmark but also a crucial commercial and transit hub. Despite its historical significance, the name is considered a vestige of colonial administration. There is a growing call from citizens and cultural organizations to rename such places with identities that are more meaningful locally.

Should the name of Master Canteen be changed, the minister suggested it would likely be in honour of one of Odisha’s great sons. However, the final decision on the new name will be made by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. The Chief Minister will take into account public sentiment and expert consultations before approving any renaming.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the new state government to reclaim Odisha’s cultural narrative. It aims to prioritize the Odia language, history, and icons in public life . While the proposal is still under deliberation, it has already generated interest and discussion among the residents of Bhubaneswar.

Many people are supporting the proposal, believing it is time for public spaces to reflect the state’s heritage . Conversely, others feel that a balanced approach is necessary, acknowledging the existing identity and familiarity associated with such iconic places.
