Filmmaker Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies has been officially selected as India’s entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars 2025. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India on September 23, 2024. Rao expressed her heartfelt gratitude in a statement, highlighting the significance of cinema in connecting people and sparking important conversations.
In her statement, Kiran Rao said, “I am deeply honored and delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life.” She emphasized that cinema transcends boundaries and hopes the film resonates with audiences worldwide, just as it has in India.
Rao also thanked the selection committee and acknowledged the strong competition from other Indian films, stating, “It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year.” She expressed her appreciation for the support from Aamir Khan Productions and Jio Studios, as well as the entire cast and crew for their hard work.
Laapataa Ladies was among 12 Hindi films considered for this prestigious honor. The film, based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami, has already garnered attention after its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year. Although it did not achieve significant box office success, its release on Netflix helped it gain a dedicated fanbase.
This selection marks a significant milestone for Kiran Rao and her team as they prepare for the upcoming Oscars. With its engaging narrative and strong performances from a fresh cast, Laapataa Ladies is poised to make an impact on the international stage.
