Cyclone Dana Targets Odisha and West Bengal with brutal Winds and Heavy Rainfall

Cyclone Dana, a terrifying storm brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is set to make landfall between Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal, posing a significant threat to the eastern coast of India. This cyclonic storm, which has already intensified into a severe weather system, is expected to bring destructive winds and torrential rains, prompting widespread preparations and evacuations.

Storm Overview Of Cyclone Dana

Formation and Path: Cyclone Dana originated over the east-central Bay of Bengal and has been steadily intensifying. It is projected to make landfall in the early hours of October 25, with wind speeds anticipated to reach 100-120 km/h, rise up to 120 km/h.

Impact Areas: The storm is expected to affect several districts in Odisha and West Bengal, Odisha’s district including Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri etc.

Prepared From Government

Evacuations: Both Odisha and West Bengal governments have initiated mass evacuations. Odisha plans to relocate up to 1 million people from vulnerable areas across 14 districts. West Bengal has also begun evacuations, focusing on coastal regions.

School Closures: Educational institutions in affected districts will remain closed from October 23 to 26 as a precautionary measure.

Transport Disruptions: Over 150 express and passenger trains have been canceled to ensure safety during the cyclone’s passage.

Relief Efforts

Disaster Response: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with state disaster management teams, is on high alert. Relief materials and personnel have been airlifted to strategic locations in preparation for post-cyclone operations.

Shelters and Supplies: Thousands of relief centers have been established, equipped with essential supplies such as food, water, and medical aid.

Weather Alerts

Rainfall Warnings: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts for both states. A red warning has been announced for October 24 and 25.

Coastal Warnings: Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea until further notice due to rough sea conditions.

As Cyclone Dana approaches, authorities urge residents in the projected path to heed evacuation orders and stay informed through official channels. The coordinated efforts between state governments and disaster management agencies aim to mitigate the impact of this severe cyclonic storm on life and property.
