Heatwave alert in Odisha

A heatwave alert in Odisha has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), warning people about a sharp rise in temperature in the coming days. According to the latest forecast, the temperature is expected to increase by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius from next week, bringing intense heat across many parts of the states.

This sudden rise in temperature may lead to uncomfortable and even dangerous weather conditions, especially during the daytime. People are advised to stay cautious and take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

As per IMD reports, several districts in Odisha may experience very high temperatures in the coming days. Coastal areas are likely to see temperatures between 36°C and 40°C, while interior districts could witness temperatures rising up to 44°C.

This increase is significantly higher than normal temperatures for this time of the year. Such conditions are usually classified as a heatwave when the temperature is 4.5°C to 6.4°C above the average.

Western parts of Odisha are expected to face the most severe heatwave conditions. Districts like Bargarh, Balangir, and Sambalpur are likely to experience extreme heat between Monday and Wednesday next week.

At the same time, coastal districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam may face hot and humid weather conditions. The humidity combined with high temperature can make the weather feel even more uncomfortable.

The temperature rise is expected to continue for the next 4 to 5 days, with peak heat conditions likely during mid-week. According to weather experts, there may not be any significant relief immediately, as clear sky conditions and lack of rainfall are contributing to the heat buildup.

Odisha generally experiences around 10 to 11 heatwave days during the summer months from April to June. This could be one of the first major heatwave spells of the season in 2026.

The primary reasons for this heatwave alert in Odisha include reduced rainfall, clear skies, and changes in wind patterns. These factors allow more sunlight to reach the ground, increasing surface temperatures.

Additionally, dry winds from inland regions are also contributing to the rise in temperature, making the conditions more severe in western Odisha.

During this heatwave period, people are advised to take extra care to protect themselves from the extreme heat. Avoid going out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and wear light, loose-fitting clothes.

It is also important to take care of children, elderly people, and outdoor workers, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related health issues such as dehydration and heatstroke.

The heatwave alert in Odisha is a serious warning that should not be ignored. With temperatures expected to rise sharply, it is important for residents to stay informed and follow safety guidelines. Taking simple precautions can help reduce the risks and keep everyone safe during this extreme weather condition.
